Stem Cell Transplants // Its Mullet time

Post by MPN-MATE Admin »

As most of you are aware, the one curable option that currently exists to cure these MPN conditions is known as an Allogenic Stem Cell Transplant (ASCT). In order to find the right Stem Cells for the task, we all need Stem Cell Donors, and below is a loving story about one person's efforts to help her 22 yo brother who has Primary Myelofibrosis (MF). Please have a read... :-)

Hallo friends,

Come the 27th of August, I’ll be losing much of my hair (to create a mullet) in aid of bettering stem cell transplants! I’m raising funds and awareness for ‘Anthony Nolan’.

As you may know, my brother Fionn Kennedy was diagnosed with rare type of blood cancer recently (Primary Myelofibrosis) - currently, the only avenue for a cure, involves a bone marrow / stem cell transplant. Luckily for us, I’m a 100% match for Fionn and so, when the time comes, I will be happily donating my stem cells to that brother of mine. However, lots of people who need a stem cell transplant are not so lucky and for some it is impossible to find a match – the lack of awareness means a severe lack in donors!

'Anthony Nolan’ is a Charity that saves the lives of people with blood cancers and other blood disorders. As well as organising donor registration and educating people about stem cell donation, they conduct ground-breaking research to improve the success rates of transplants which, while easy for donors (not much harder than giving blood) is still a major deal for recipients.

So here's THE PLAN FOR THE MULLET:

I, Kitale Kennedy, will be letting you, dear friends, determine how long I keep the delightful mop on my head. The deal is, the more you donate, the longer it stays. For every 25 squids raised, the mullet stays another day for up to a month! When the time is up, I’ll SHAVE OFF ALL OF MY HAIR in a grade one fashion as well – it’s a double whammy of charity haircuts if you ask me. And for every one of you that persuades someone else to, or themselves registers as a donor (I’ll need photo proof) I’ll spend an extra day being 'business in the front, part in the back'.

Even if you desperately don’t want to see me sporting a mullet, it would mean a great deal to me and many others if you could spare even just a few squid so that we can ensure that we’ve done all we can to make the transplant run smoothly for Fionn and all the others like him.

Love and Hugs!

Kitale xoxo

p.s. I know some of you are but mere, poor students, but never fear - you too can help without using that last 50p before the end of your overdraft limit – SIGN UP TO THE REGISTER (its super easy and also then you can call yourself a lifesaver, which is pretty neat if you ask me)
p.p.s Even if you if you are able to donate money, please also SIGN UP TO THE REGISTER, and I’ll sing your praises far and wide! Let’s save some damn lives!
